Distance in kilometres
The Gibb River Road is an old stock route once used to drive cattle from all the cattle stations along "The Road" to the port of Wyndham. From the East Kimberley it is approximately 660kms in length and starts at the Great Northern Highway near El Questro's entry finishing at the Derby Highway within the West Kimberley at Derby. Midway along "The Road" is the turn off to the access road known as the Kalumburu Road which heads northward toward the Kimberley coastal town of Kalumburu.
Driving the 120kms from Kununurra to Home Valley Station requires a 4WD vehicle, well equipped with spare tyres and emergency provisions. The initial sector from Kununurra to the Gibb River Road turn-off travels along the Great Northern Highway for approximately 55kms, this is a well maintained sealed road. The remaining 69kms along the Gibb River Road is unsealed, however, it is in wonderful condition compared to previous years of deep corrugations and dangerous shoulders it once suffered. Travellers will experience the raw beauty of the Kimberley outback, with spectacular scenery at every stage. Depending on the time of year, and the status of the road's opening dates which is determined by local authorities, travellers will be faced with two major river crossings, the smaller King River Crossing and the enormous Pentecost River Crossing. Once travellers are across the Pentecost River they have entered onto Home Valley Station. The access road, or driveway, to Home Valley Station's Homestead is approximately 10kms from the river and is less than 2kms off the Gibb River Road, clearly signposted with directions.
